Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel Ceiling

From 1508-1512, Michelangelo was commissioned by Pope Julius II to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, a Papal chapel built in the late 1400s in the Vatican. Michelangelo, a well-known sculptor during his time, demonstrated his superb mastery in painting, unleashing his imaginative side and creating one of the most recognized masterpieces of High Renaissance Art. Depicted in the chapel ceiling are nine scenes from the Christian Bible’s Book of Genesis, which includes the most famous scene of the Creation of Adam.

This display features a three dimensional model of the Sistine Chapel and its interior as well as published books on Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel Ceiling found in the collection of the Hofheimer Art Library.
